"More Pegs Need Knockin"

REVIEW |

Author: Akil Henry

The sequel to Popcap's Peggle, aptly named Peggle 2, is basically more of the same.  While the base game is still the same hit all the orange pegs gameplay that has entertained millions of people over the past few years, the overall the package just doesn't capture the magic that the original did.

Continuing from where the first titles left off.... you’re still in school (sounds like real life, eh?) getting educated on the ways of the Peggle by the Peggle Masters. Throughout the Peggle 2 campaign, these masters grant you a power that allows you to clear the orange pegs in interesting ways. Aside from the first master being the exactly the same as the previous game, these masters are all brand new, but unlike the first one, some of these powers fall flat and are underwhelming. Initially being able to turn the ball into a boulder is cool, but when given the choice at the end of the campaign between powers to use, why anyone would choose that ability over the ghost Peggle ability, which gives insane point bonuses and makes levels infinitely easier, is beyond me.

Aside from the new masters not being equally as balanced as the first set were, Peggle 2 does feel a bit bigger than the first one, from the ability to customize the appearance of the masters this time around and added challenges gives the game replay value. There's also an online mode available, but the game doesn't support local multiplayer, and it appears there's going to be DLC down the road too.

Overall, Peggle 2 is fun, but there’s nothing it does that the first game didn’t do. It does what it does well, but it doesn’t blow the original out of the water. Even with what is arguably more content with fewer levels, nothing really compelled me to go back and beat my scores like the first game did; but there’s nothing here that’s horrible.

GameDynamo's Score for Peggle 2 (XB1)
Graphics
Looks similar to the first, but it kind of feels like a slapstick version of the first one.
Sound
Classical music is still used. Nothing really sticks out, but then again, you can just ignore it and play your own.
Gameplay
Same fun gameplay, but the part that really makes Peggle, the masters, is hit or miss.
Play Value
Plenty to do in the levels after beating them, such as challenges. Might be over sooner than the first game, since there are less levels.

Final Score  73
A fun game, but it doesn’t really amaze like the first title did.
