"A Fun Romp through a Whimsical World"

REVIEW |

Author: Akil Henry

Child of Light's premise is awfully strange, a side scroller with an RPG battle system...by a western developer.  Going in at first, I didn't have high hopes for what I was playing, but as I continued I was surprised with what I experienced.

Child of Light stars Aurora, a young princess from 1895 Austria who has fallen into a coma and has awoken into a mysterious dream world in order to come back to the real world.  Along the way she meets a number of allies as she explores her dream world. The story feels a lot like Eternal Sonata, with scenes hopping back and forth from Aurora in her dream world and how people in the real world are hoping she recovers.

Gameplay is pretty standard side-scroller fare until Aurora touches an enemy; it's here that the game switches to a traditional turn based RPG battle system with a few real-time touches.  While your party member's speed stats do have an impact on their attack rate in the on screen action timeline, the right thumbstick controls Igniculus, an ally that can be used to slow down enemies, collect health and mana from plants on the battle field or even directly heal the party.  This is not needed if you're looking for an old school RPG experience, but it adds another element of strategy to battles against stronger enemies as you slow them down to eventually interrupt their attacks, and a way for the game to add co-op gameplay through a second player controlling Igniculus.

Child of Light pulled me into its world in shorts bursts. The unique art style and gameplay in a side scrolling title is really unlike anything else out today.  It also has the perfect length, being short enough that you feel as if you can actually do everything in the world, while not over staying its welcome with a bloat of content.

GameDynamo's Score for Child of Light (X360)
Graphics
Beautiful, hand-drawn whimsical environments that look like a watercolor painting.
Sound
Matches the world. Nothing too memorable.
Gameplay
Fun combat system with plenty of upgrades and characters level up at a steady pace.
Play Value
Child of Light is a downloadable title and the content is paced accordingly. No grinding is needed.

Final Score  78
A nice bite sized RPG that does things a bit differently and is worth checking out.
