"The High School From Your Nightmares"

REVIEW |

Author: Nora Bartel

The Vita has been getting some more attention lately, and one of the newest games to come out on the system is the Japanese original Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. This is a creepy little mystery game that plays out like a visual-novel. In the game, a group of Japanese students are locked up together in a high school. The only way to escape? Kill one of your fellow students.

Danganronpa takes a lot of visual cues from the Persona series. It works well, as the colorful environment feels unsettling when placed with the dark story. The anime-style characters are all unique and look great whether you are in a cut scene or just engaging in gameplay conversation. The soundtrack for the game works well too – the BGM tracks have been designed to keep that feeling of mystery and weirdness. As far as voice acting goes, you can choose from English or Japanese dialogue. I went with Japanese, and have not been disappointed. The voices are unique for each character and sound authentic.

The gameplay is a bit similar to the Ace Attorney series or Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward. There’s not a lot of action to be had, but that’s not the point of the game. Instead, you’ll need to listen carefully to dialogue, explore crime scenes, and then complete a Class Trial. Throughout the game, you can explore the high school in a first-person perspective. You can explore various items and interact with characters as you explore to move the story forward. You’ll also learn more about your classmates and fill out their “Report Cards” with more information. Playing can be a little slow at times, especially with all the dialogue, but you can save your game whenever to take a break from the mystery.

If you are looking for something a little different, try out Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc. It’s a unique little game that’s perfect for anyone who loves a good mystery. Check it out on the PlayStation Vita, either with a physical copy or through the PlayStation Store.

GameDynamo's Score for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc (PS Vita)
Graphics
The polished anime-style graphics perfectly suit the dark storyline and weird happenings.
Sound
The BGM is very well done, and the voice acting complements the characters well. It can get a bit repetitive, as the music loops and characters only utter the same certain phrases.
Gameplay
If you like solving mysteries, it'll be fun to uncover clues and talk to suspects in the game. However, it can be slow and is not for everyone.
Play Value
Getting to the bottom of things is the main goal, but with an alternate storyline after beating the game and trophies, this game has some serious replay value.

Final Score  86
For the right audience, this game is a home run. With its dark story, intense graphics, and unique gameplay, it brings something new to the Vita.
